LIGHT CUBE

The Light Cube is made from cardboard and paper, no glue needed. Its gradient color change is created by the shadows from multiple paper layers.

Yellow LED light turns purple

Color Experiment

-Inspiration from Origami Whale

I found that color of LED lights will change when it goes through layers of copy papers. My guess is the colors are shadows of papers.

Color Experiment 01

-Copy Paper

I conducted a series of experiments to investigate how the color of an LED would change as it passed through several layers of copy paper.

Color Experiment 02

-Print Paper

Since LED light changes color when it goes through copy papers, it may change color when it goes through other kinds of papers. So, I started to test other papers.

Go back to the whale

I used two pieces of paper to fold the origami whale, and when the LED light goes through several layers of paper, the color changes as my experience with copy papers and print papers.

Color Experiment 03

-Napkin

A single layer of napkin only blocks a little light, so I added four layers at once. The light turns yellow, which is the original color of the LED light. However, it adds an interesting texture.

Color Experiment 04

-Smooth Tracing Paper

Smooth tracing paper blocks very little light, allowing the light to create a beautiful and clean magenta color.

Color Experiment 05

-Translucent Vellum Paper

Vellum paper creates more than one color. The LED light turns orange in 16 layers, but when it is increased to 32 layers, it turns red.

Color Experiment 06

-Patterns

Patterns can be seen when colors change rapidly. Papers like print paper and copy paper are nice for creating patterns.

Color Experiment 07

-Gradient Color

After experimenting with patterns, I tried to create a gradient effect. Since tracing paper is very thin and the color change is very slow, I believe it is ideal for achieving a gradient effect.

Cube for Light

Final Cube

Material: E-flute, Copy paper

Source: issuu.coom (CHAMFERED BOX)

Size: 4*4*4 inch (sit), 5.5*5.5*6.5 inch (stand)

There are holes for inserts, so the cube can be assembled firmly without any glue.

These are mall support to connect the model part and the whole piece.

Final Cube Light

I only used copy paper, and laser-cut them into circles with different sizes.
I want to show how simple copy paper could create a purple, gradient pattern.
